My Creative Outlet

I’ve written before about my surprise in finding I enjoy crafty things like sewing and scrapbooking.  I had kind of pigeon-holed myself into the scientific/analytic role and somehow convinced myself that precluded creativity.  How wrong I was!  Everyone needs a creative outlet. So, I’ve fallen deeply in love with Etsy and all things crafty.  I was wishing and wishing that I could get good enough to actually sell my wares.  I think I’m a way off with my knitting and sewing but I recently found a wonderful creative outlet in a place I had never imagined: T-shirts.

Several years ago I started a CafePress shop called 1 in 8 that focused on Infertility Advocacy.  I wouldn’t call my designs attractive at all (lol) but I wanted to personally own a bag that said “I am 1 in 8″ to spark conversation about infertility so voila! a shop.  Over the years I added Mother’s Day Cards for Childless Mothers.  Then, while I was on bedrest with the boys I was looking for cute baby onsies for Frozen Embryo babies and didn’t find anything I liked so I thought I’d design my own.  Here’s what I came up with (I think my favorite is “My first babysitter was an embryologist”):

Ice Baby (FET)
Cute IVF Embryo
Snowflake Baby (FET)
IVF worth the wait
FET Baby
IUI Baby
IVF Baby
1 Samuel 1:27
Embryologist
FET Ice Age
Miracle
ICSI Pixie
Petri Dish
IVF Scrabble
IVF (fingerspelling)

Wow, this time something clicked!  It was fun and I thought my designs were really cute.  Once I started I couldn’t stop.  I started making all the shirt designs I wish I could own to promote breastfeeding, cosleeping, babywearing, and more.  I reorganized it into a new shop called Baby Dust Diaries Shop since it includes all the topics from infertility to parenting that I blog about.  I hope you’ll check it out and let me know what you think.  I have designs in progress so suggestions on new items (or tweaks of existing items – for example I want to include more multicultural and gay/lesbian themes) let me know!

Here’s a preview of some of the categories I’m designing for (including an “Attached Dad” section for Father’s Day designed with help from my hubby):

Attached Dad
Attachment Parenting
A.R.T. Babies & Pregnancy After Infertility
Babywearing
Breastfeeding
Cloth Diapered
Cosleeping/Family Bed
Feminist
Gentle Discipline
Homeschool
Infertility Awareness

All the products (from baby onsies, to maternity shirts, to water bottles and mugs) are produced and shipped from CafePress and I get a commission for the sales of my designs. If you like ‘em and buy one you’ll help me with the cost of Baby Dust Diaries and spreading the word about these important issues (even if it is in a humorous way). Tell your friends about them too!
